The next Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action is
April 1, 2021

Save the Date: April 1, 2021
Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action!

We’re excited to announce that the next Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action (formerly Kick Butts Day) will take place virtually on April 1, 2021.

Details will come soon, but here’s what to expect:

  • A robust digital toolkit for hosting your own virtual event and maximizing its impact.
  • An interactive, virtual national event that brings it all together, hosted by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
  • Event registration will open on our website later this month. So save the date, do some brainstorming, and start spreading the word!

On April 1st, young people and youth allies will come together to tell the tobacco industry that we won’t be fooled anymore. We hope you’ll join us.

Because of COVID-19, we’re not encouraging or supporting in-person events. But that won’t stop us from making our voices heard – and having a little fun while we do it.

Why April Fool’s Day?

The tobacco industry peddles products that addict, sicken, and kill. So how do they get people to use products like that? They have to fool them. They use youth-oriented marketing to make it seem cool, brightly-colored packaging to make it seem fun, and sweet flavors to make it seem harmless – all to make the poison go down easy. Now, they’re trying to position themselves as “responsible” and “reformed,” as they vigorously fight efforts to reduce tobacco use. They’ve even taken advantage of COVID-19 to push their products!

What is Take Down Tobacco?

Take Down Tobacco is a fresh take on Kick Butts Day — the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids annual day of action. The Take Down Tobacco program is a 365-day effort that culminates every spring with the Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action. 2021 marks the 26th anniversary of this program, and there have been many important victories since the first Kick Butts Day was held in 1996.

Over the past quarter century, the U.S. has made remarkable progress in doing just what the Kick Butts Day name describes: kicking butts. But even though youth smoking rates are on a downward trend and at an all-time low, skyrocketing youth e-cigarettes rates are reversing the progress we’ve made toward achieving the first tobacco-free generation. And of course, from cigarettes and cigars to smokeless tobacco to heat-not-burn cigarettes, the tobacco industry peddles a wide range of addictive and dangerous products that put kids at risk across the globe.

Take Down Tobacco is a reflection of both how far we've come and how far we still need to go to achieve the first tobacco-free generation.
