Body Bag or Tombstone Display
Make an impact and spark conversation with a powerful visual showing the deadly consequences of tobacco and highlight Big Tobacco’s bad acts.
You’ll Need
- Posters
- Markers
- Gray and black paint/spray paint
- Body bags (you can ask your local police department or hospital) or black trash bags (for body bag display)
- Newspapers and/or other materials to make the “body bags” look full
Instructions
Before the Activity:
- Brainstorm what statistic and message you want to display.
- The messages can include the toll of tobacco in your community, names of those whose lives have been lost from tobacco use, or quote from the tobacco industry related to death and disease.
- The statistic you choose can be a specific number to represent a statistic or you can use the body bags to display facts or show tobacco-related deaths.
- Identify a high traffic location to set up your display, be sure to get the proper permission ahead of time.
- Create the signs, posters, and other visuals to explain your statistic and display.
- Contact the media and make sure they know what you are doing, where you will be, and what time you will be there.
During the Activity:
- Set-up your display in a high-traffic location!
- Set up a table or booth manned by your group members to share additional information on fighting Big Tobacco on hand.
- Post photos and videos to social media with the hashtag #TakeDownTobacco
After the Activity:
- Contact the media again! Be sure to send a press release and photos to any media outlets who didn’t show up.
