They Put WHAT in a Cigarette?!

Clear the haze about what's in cigarettes and/or e-cigarettes with this educational activity.

You’ll Need

  • Poster
  • Markers
  • Various household items like batteries, vinegar, hair dye, nail polish remover, cleaning supplies, disinfectant, paint and others listed here.

Instructions

Before the Activity:

  • Track down some household items that contain the same ingredients as cigarettes. If you aren’t able to find items, you can create a poster display.
  • Organize a place where you can display these products or your poster in a populated area, either at your school’s lunch period or a spot in your community where there’s heavy foot traffic. Get the proper permission in advance!
  • Create the signs, posters, and other visuals to explain your display including all of the chemical names and title it “What’s in a cigarette?”
  • Take your visual display one step farther and create a display of what’s in an e-cigarette to further educate your peers and members of your communities that all tobacco products are not safe. Check out what’s in an e-cigarette here
  • Contact the media and make sure they know what you are doing, where you will be, and what time you will be there.

During the Activity:

  • Set-up and create your visual display in the planned location where many people will see it
  • Set up a table or booth manned by your group members to share additional information on fighting Big Tobacco on hand. When passersby approach your display, explain that these items contain the same ingredients as what’s in a cigarette
  • Post photos and videos to social media with the hashtag #TakeDownTobacco

After the Activity:

  • Contact the media again! Be sure to send a press release and photos to any media outlets who didn’t show up.
  • Post photos and videos to social media with the hashtag #TakeDownTobacco
